Accepting Citation Exceptions



No matter how diligent you are, it's only a matter of time before you find a great source with incomplete information or more information than you know how to cite.

Welcome to the Citation Exceptions guide.

Here, broken down by format, then by type of exception, you will find what you need to be able to use that special source for your research paper or thesis.

APA Exceptions and Special Circumstances

More than six authors
         List first one or two in alphabetical order by last name with et al. after.

A work not yet published
         For year of publication put (in press).

No date of publication
         For year of publication use (n.d.)

For a monthly publication
         Use month and year for publication date.

For a weekly publication
         Use full date - month, day and year.


MLA Exceptions and Special Circumstances

Two authors
         List first one Last name, First Name and the second First Name Last Name in alphabetical order.

More than two authors
         List first one Last name, First Name with et al. after.

Unknown Author
         List alphabetically the first word of the title other than a, an or the.
